Hello world! Welcome to a very special segment. As a creative it's important for me to watch as much TV as I can, so I know where I fit into the industry. But sometimes it's good to watch TV to switch off, relax and take a break. So here are my TV recommendations. Two of which are the type of show I see myself in, and one just for my own entertainment.
1) Ralph & Katie:
My first recommendation is "Ralph & Katie".
This is a spin-off series from "The A Word" (which I also recommend and watch first before you watch this show), where the show centres on a couple who go through their first year of marriage. Leon Harrop, who plays Ralph, and Sarah Gordy, who plays Katie, portrayed their roles brilliantly. The show also highlighted some important issues, one of which was seen in episode 5. I won't say what incase anyone reading this blog has not seen the show, but all I will say is it's a powerful one.
I also watched the director of the show Jordan Hogg on an Act On This podcast at the start of the year, and his passion for creating a show starring actors from an underrepresented group is incredible. Fingers crossed if I'm lucky and keep being consistent in keeping in touch with him and the Casting Director of the show Andy Pryor, I may be in one of his shows very soon. Possibly a show like Ralph & Katie, as it's important to recognise talent within the disabled community, or any underrepresented background for that matter.
2) Granite Harbour
Another show that I enjoyed is "Granite Harbour".
This show starred Act On This member Michelle Jeram who, like myself, she is also autistic, playing the role of Simone "Monty" Montrose. This is a three part drama, where the it tells the story of Lindo Davies (portrayed by Romario Simpson), who dreams of becoming a detective, but soon finds himself at the deep end when he gets involved in a murder case.
I had mixed opinions on this show. As whilst it's good to have a series like this with not so many episodes, therefore easier to binge watch, it was a little bit of a slow burner for me. But by episode 3 I was left wanting more. Whilst it was a good thing that I wanted more, I think two more episodes in and maybe it would've added more flavour. Never the less, I still enjoyed watching this incredible series and I can't wait to see where this goes. I've also been told that Michelle is filming series 2 later on this year, and after watching her performance, I know that she and the rest of the cast will do a cracking job. And once I've watched the podcast with the Casting Director of the show, which is Simone Pereira Hind, I may find myself in a possible third series of it or something similar as a witness/victim (as that's one of my casting types in this industry), even if it is just for one line.
3) Nolly
My final recommendation in this blog is "Nolly".
This series is based off the true life story of Noelle Gordon aka Nolly, played by the incredible Helena Bonham Carter, and also casted by Andy Pryor. This show was produced by Quay Street productions, which again I discovered through Act On This, where Ross Grant, the host and founder, interviewed Nicola Schindler, who is in charge of the company.
What I liked about this show is that it uses characters from the true story, like Nolly herself, and also fictionalised characters, keeping the acting element of the show. It also gives you clips from her life, which makes you feel as though you're transported in time, going on the journey with her. This show also featured the incredible Con O'Neill, who I recognised from playing the role of Michael "Mickey" Johnstone in "Blood Brothers" from 1988, which I watched clips of during my GCSE Drama course. With screen acting, it's such a different level to theatre as you need to tone it right down in order to give off a natural performance, and he did just that. It always amazes me how actors like him can master both techniques, and whilst this is a show that I don't see myself in, he is a fine example of how to master both stage and screen acting.
So those were my TV recommendations. I've got some more recommendations to show to you all, so stay tuned on what they are very soon. I don't know when, so make sure you keep your eye out :)
See you next time for another blog, and until then...
This is the autistic actress singing off :)
